KAHANI EK DABBE KI
A day in Mumbai starts with a train ride and ends with one. Every time you travel by tram, you always encounter something new. Life in Mumbai fast-paced, there's so much to do and very little time. Women in the local trains try to check off some things from their day-to-day lists, traveling on the train for 2-3 hours daily. The train dabba becomes another workspace Activities like combing their hairs, applying makeup, reading and preparing for exams, or getting ready for meetings become part of ther morning journey. Women make many trends by strong up conversations with strangers about their day and life, in general their everyday encounters with each other and end up building friendship with each other. Some days they become so close that they start bringing food for each other, even reserving seats for friends who board at the next stop.
We've encountered such moments many times in our journey, making us curious about what other activities might be happening in such a compact and crowded space. We chose the Virar Local because everyone always talks about how crowded it is. People from Virar travel south in the Churchgate Local for work, and we saw this as an opportunity to discover more stories.
Our fieldwork spanned three days during which we traveled back and forth on the Virar Churchgate Local throughout the day. We used photographs as a medium to document these activities.
